What about Houston traffic on the way?
Leave early or take US-90 through Sugar Land to avoid the worst of it. On a Friday morning before 8 AM, I-10 through Houston is manageable. Coming home on Sunday is usually smooth.
Can I make this a day trip?
We'd recommend an overnight at minimum. At 5 hours each way, a weekend lets you actually enjoy Fredericksburg's restaurants, wineries, and Main Street.
Spring (wildflower season) is gorgeous and a great escape from the Gulf Coast humidity. Fall is perfect weather. Winter has a cozy, quiet charm. Summer is hot everywhere, but the tasting room has A/C and cold wine.
